Sales tax and VAT report
See how much sales tax and VAT you collected on Shopify, your effective tax rate, and orders sold with no tax, filtered by country for filing.
Updated July 8, 2026
This report shows the sales tax and VAT you collected - the total, your effective rate, and any orders that charged no tax - and lets you filter by country for filing.
What it shows
The top cards summarise the period:
- Total tax collected: tax charged to customers.
- Effective tax rate: total tax divided by the order value excluding tax. A fully taxed store at 25% VAT shows 25%; the rate falls when some orders are sold with no tax.
- Orders with no tax, and the value of those untaxed sales - the orders pulling the effective rate below the standard rate.
Below that, a per-order table shows the order value excluding tax, the tax paid, and the tax rate on each order. Orders that charged no tax are flagged. For a plain-English explainer of how tax sits alongside your other numbers, see how tax and VAT are handled.
Filters and options
- Date range picker.
- Compare to the previous period, the previous year, or a custom range.
- Country filter: pick a country (with its flag) to see only the tax collected on orders shipped there. Useful for VAT filing per market. It scopes the summary, the order table, and the CSV export. Only countries you actually sold to in the period are listed.
- Tax view: all orders, only taxed orders, or only no-tax orders.
- Schedule report: emailed on a schedule with a CSV attached.
- Export data: download as a CSV (Business plan).
When to use it
Use it at filing time to see the tax collected in a given country, or any time you want to check that tax is being charged where it should be. An unexpectedly large "no tax" share usually points to orders that should have charged tax but did not. To dig into the profit behind those same orders, open the orders report, and for where tax fits into your margins see how profit is calculated.
Frequently asked questions
How much sales tax did I collect this quarter?
Set the date range to the quarter and the "Total tax collected" card shows the tax you charged customers over that period.
How do I see tax collected by country for VAT filing?
Use the country filter to pick a single country. It scopes the summary, the per-order table, and the CSV export to orders shipped there, so you get the figure for that market's return.
Why do some orders show no tax?
Those are sales that charged no tax at checkout. A large no-tax share usually points to orders that should have charged tax but did not, so they are worth checking.
