Payment & transaction fees report

See what you pay in Shopify payment and transaction fees, gateway by gateway, with the effective fee rate on each plus cash-on-delivery, currency, platform, and chargeback costs.

Updated July 8, 2026

This report shows what you pay to get paid, gateway by gateway - the total processing fees, your effective fee rate on each, and the cash-on-delivery, currency, platform, and chargeback costs Shopify never separates.

What it shows

The top cards summarise your payment costs for the period:

  • Payment fees: total processing fees across every gateway.
  • Effective fee rate: those fees as a share of the revenue you processed.
  • Total payment cost: processing fees plus the extras below.
  • Cards for cash-on-delivery, currency conversion, Shopify platform fees (charged when an order is paid through a non-Shopify-Payments gateway), and chargeback fees. Each appears only when it applies to your store this period.

The table below breaks fees down per gateway - the orders processed, the revenue, the fees, the effective rate you pay on that gateway, and its share of your total fees. Comparing gateways is the fastest way to see where processing costs the most. The same fees appear as a cost line on your profit and loss report.

Filters and options

  • Date range picker.
  • Compare to the previous period, the previous year, or a custom range. Each value then shows this period with the comparison below it.
  • Schedule report: get it emailed weekly, monthly, or quarterly with the data attached as a CSV.
  • Export data: download the report as a CSV (Business plan).

When to use it

Use it to decide whether a gateway is worth its fee, or to catch a setup gap: a gateway showing a near-zero effective rate usually means its fees are not being captured. Shopify Payments fees come straight from Shopify; for other gateways you set a fee rule under Cost rules, Payment fees (/app/costs/payments) - see how payment fees are worked out for how those rules estimate each charge. Because every fee comes straight out of your margin, how profit is calculated shows where they land.

Frequently asked questions

How much am I paying in Shopify payment fees?

Is PayPal more expensive than Shopify Payments?

The per-gateway table shows the effective rate you pay on each gateway, so you can compare PayPal against Shopify Payments side by side.

Why does one gateway show a near-zero fee rate?

A near-zero effective rate usually means that gateway's fees are not being captured. Shopify Payments fees come straight from Shopify, but for other gateways you set a fee rule under Cost rules, Payment fees.
