Chargebacks (disputes) report

See your Shopify Payments chargebacks and disputes and what each one costs you - the chargeback fee plus any amount lost, the reason, and which order was hit.

Updated July 8, 2026

This report lists your Shopify Payments disputes for the period and what each one costs you - the chargeback fee plus any amount lost, the reason, and which order was hit.

What it shows

  • A summary banner: how many disputes there were, how many are open, how many were lost, and the total cost.
  • When you compare periods, cards for the dispute count and the cost to you.
  • A table of disputes with: the order, the date, the type (inquiry or chargeback), the status, the reason, the disputed amount, and the cost to you. Inquiries carry no fee.

If a dispute's exact fee is not yet reported by Shopify, the report uses the default chargeback fee you set under Fees and adjustments until the real amount comes through.

Filters and options

  • Date range picker.
  • Compare to the previous period, the previous year, or a custom range. The dispute list stays on the current period; the comparison applies to the summary count and cost.

Disputes are tracked from Shopify Payments only. Disputes raised through PayPal or other gateways do not appear here.

When to use it

Use it to see what disputes are costing you, which orders were hit, and how many are still open and need a response. A dispute's cost lands on the order it hit and drags that order's profit down, so the negative profit orders report lists orders that ended up losing money. For losses from goods coming back rather than payment disputes, see the returns cost report.
