Discount erosion report
See how much revenue you give away to discount codes and promotions on Shopify, the share of sales it eats, and which codes cost the most.
Updated July 8, 2026
This report shows how much revenue you gave away to discount codes and promotions in a period, what share of sales that is, and which codes cost the most.
What it shows
Three summary cards at the top: the total discount given (and how many orders were discounted), your gross revenue (the subtotal before discounts), and the discount as a percentage of gross revenue. Below that, a "By discount type" table groups discounts into discount codes, automatic discounts, manual discounts, and other, each with its order count, total discount given, and average per order. A "Top discount codes" table then lists your most-used codes (up to 20) with the same figures. When an order used more than one code, its full discount is counted against each code on that order, so a single code's total can be overstated - treat the top-codes figures as approximate.

How to read it
A high percentage of gross revenue going to discounts means promotions are eating into your margin. Use the top codes table to find the specific codes costing you the most, so you can tighten or retire the ones that are not paying off. If your profit moved over the same period, the profit change report shows what drove the change; to find individual orders where a discount pushed the order into a loss, open the negative profit orders report.
Frequently asked questions
How much revenue am I giving away in discounts?
The summary cards show the total discount given in the period, how many orders were discounted, and that total as a percentage of your gross revenue (the subtotal before discounts).
Which discount code costs me the most?
The Top discount codes table ranks your most-used codes by total discount given. Because an order that used more than one code has its full discount counted against each code on it, treat a single code's figure as approximate rather than exact.
Are my promotions worth it?
A high share of gross revenue going to discounts means promotions are eating your margin. Use the top codes table to tighten or retire the codes that are not paying off.
