Profit by category report

Net profit grouped by Shopify product type and ranked, with units, revenue, margin, and each type's share of total profit, so you can see which categories carry your profit and which drag it down.

Updated July 8, 2026

This report groups your net profit by Shopify product type and ranks it - with units, revenue, margin, and each type's share of total profit - so the categories that make money and the ones that lose it both stand out.

What it shows

One row per product type, ranked by net profit. For each you see:

  • Units sold and revenue.
  • Net profit and margin (net profit as a share of that category's revenue).
  • Share of profit: how much of your total net profit the category is responsible for. A negative share means the category lost money while the store overall made a profit.

Products with no product type set are grouped together as "(no product type)". If that row is large, setting product types in Shopify makes this report sharper.

Filters and options

  • Date range picker.
  • Compare to the previous period, the previous year, or a custom range. Each value then shows this period with the comparison below it.
  • Schedule report: emailed weekly, monthly, or quarterly with a CSV attached.
  • Export data: download as a CSV (Business plan).

When to use it

Use it to decide where to put attention: a category with strong revenue but thin or negative margin is dragging the whole store, and this is where that shows up. It is grouped by Shopify's product type field, not collections. To drill in, open the all products report for the products inside a category, or the vendor profit report to split the same profit by brand.

Frequently asked questions

Which product category makes the most profit?

The report shows one row per Shopify product type ranked by net profit, with units, revenue, margin, and each type's share of your total profit, so the top category is at the top.

Which categories are losing money?

A negative share of profit means a category lost money while the store overall made a profit; ranked by net profit, those categories fall to the bottom.

Can I see profit by collection?

The report groups by Shopify's product type field, not collections. Products with no product type set are grouped together, so filling in product types in Shopify makes it sharper.
