Emails, tickets and design

Drag-and-drop editor for emails and tickets

Change the design and wording of your ticket emails, PDF ticket, online ticket page and storefront popup for each event with drag-and-drop blocks or your own HTML.

Updated September 24, 2026

Every event has seven templates you change in a drag-and-drop editor: four emails, the PDF ticket, the online ticket page and the storefront popup. Each editor shows a live preview next to its settings.

The seven editors and where to open them

All seven open from the event's Event settings.

  • Confirmation, Reminder, Follow-up and Waitlist emails: the Emails tab, the email's card, Customize.
  • PDF ticket: the Tickets tab, Ticket designs, the PDF ticket card, Customize.
  • Online ticket page: the Tickets tab, Ticket designs, the Online ticket page card, Customize.
  • Attendee popup and waitlist popup: the Attendee information tab, Storefront popup, Customize.

What every editor shares

The top bar has a back button and, in every editor except the popup, Design templates. When Customer languages is on and your store sells in more than one language, Preview language and Translate sit on the right.

The left sidebar, from the top:

  • Event jumps to the same editor of another event. It copies nothing.
  • Layout lists the blocks. Drag a row to reorder it, and click its eye to show or hide it. Keyboard reordering works too.
  • Add block adds text, images, columns and information panels.
  • Global settings holds the logo, colours and font for the whole template. The popup editor calls it Style.
  • Reset to default sits at the bottom.

Click a block in the list or in the preview to open its settings: Visible elements, Content and Appearance. You type in the sidebar, and the preview updates as you type. Clicking the preview only selects a block.

The preview has Desktop and Mobile views. It uses a sample attendee, "John Smith" with ticket "#1001", and your event's real name, date, venue and join link.

Save with the Shopify admin save bar. Discard drops unsaved edits; there is no other undo.

The emails, the PDF and the ticket page use your shop logo from Settings, Brand settings. The logo picker shows "Using your shop logo", "Using a custom logo", "No logo selected" or "Logo hidden", and Use shop logo switches back. Remove the image to hide the logo.

The blocks in each template

  • Confirmation email: Header, Greeting, Event Details, Ticket Info, Order Details, QR Code, Button and Footer. The five newer designs, every design except Classic, add a Banner image after the Header.
  • Reminder and follow-up: Header, Greeting, Event Details, Message, Button and Footer. The Button starts hidden, and the follow-up starts with the join link hidden. There is no QR code or ticket block.
  • Waitlist email: the reminder's blocks with the Message hidden and the Button shown. The Button opens the event's product page when you leave its URL empty. It can never show a join link.
  • PDF ticket: Branding, Event Info, Ticket Stub, Order Details and Notes. The Digital and Physical presets are covered in PDF tickets.
  • Online ticket page: Header, Event Info, Ticket Details, QR & Downloads and Notes.
  • Popup: Header, Description, Attendee Form and Buttons, with a switch between Attendee popup and Waitlist popup. The popup editor's style controls are covered in the attendee popup and its designer.

The Visible elements toggles decide which details a block prints.

  • Event Details: Date, Time, Location and Join link, in the order you drag them. The join link only prints on an online event.
  • Ticket Info: Attendee, Ticket type and Ticket code.
  • Order Details: Selected options and Refund Protection. The block only shows when the order has add-ons or refund protection.
  • QR & Downloads on the ticket page: QR code, PDF download and Add to calendar.
  • Event Info on the ticket page: Event name, Time, Location and Highlight meeting password, which is off by default.

In the emails, Global settings has Accent color, Body background, Content background, Text color and Font family. The fonts are System Default, Arial, Georgia, Verdana and Courier, plus Design default on the newer designs. The Header and Footer blocks have their own colours. On the ticket page every block has its own font, size, weight, alignment and colours.

A few tools belong to one editor.

  • Confirmation email: Preview multi-ticket email shows three tickets grouped in one email.
  • PDF ticket and ticket page: Sample attendee sets the name the preview is drawn with. Nothing you type there is saved.
  • PDF ticket: Preview PDF opens the real PDF of the last saved design.
  • Ticket page: Preview live opens your unsaved draft in a new window.
  • Popup: Attendees 1, 2 or 3 previews several ticket forms.

Add block: custom blocks and information panels

Add block puts the new block at the end of the list; drag it into place. The trash button in the block's settings deletes it.

  • The four emails offer Plan your visit, Good to know, Questions?, Practical information columns, Text, Image and Columns.
  • The online ticket page offers the same, without Practical information columns.
  • The PDF ticket offers Plan your visit, Good to know, Questions? and Text. The newer designs add Practical information columns.
  • The popup offers Text, Image and Columns.

What each block holds:

  • Text: your content with Bold, Italic and Link, a Text size (Small 12px, Medium 14px or Large 18px) and alignment. On the PDF, a text block has the content only.
  • Image: a picture uploaded or picked from Shopify Files, Alt text, a Width (Full width, Medium 50% or Small 25%) and Alignment.
  • Columns: a left and a right column, each holding text or an image.
  • Plan your visit, Good to know and Questions?: a callout with a bold title and your text.
  • Practical information columns: one to four columns, each with a Heading, Text and an icon.

Text blocks print exactly as typed and fill in no variables. There is no video, map, countdown or product block.

In any email editor, open the Footer block and find Social links. Press Add social link, pick a Platform (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube or Website) and add a URL to make the icon clickable. An icon without a URL still shows.

Each email template keeps its own links, and there are none until you add one. The PDF, the ticket page and the popup have no social links.

Template variables

Variables are placeholders in double curly braces that the app swaps for real details when it sends or shows a template. They are plain find-and-replace, with no conditions, loops or filters.

In the visual editor, only a few fields take them.

  • Header title, in all four emails, takes event_name.
  • Heading and Subtext, in the confirmation Greeting, take first_name, event_name and ticket_count.
  • The waitlist greeting takes attendee_name.

The reminder and follow-up greetings and messages take none, and neither do text blocks.

In the code editor, the Variables button lists what each template takes:

Confirmation email (14)
{{event_name}} {{attendee_name}} {{first_name}} {{ticket_code}} {{ticket_type}}
{{seat}} {{ticket_url}} {{qr_code_url}} {{event_date}} {{event_time}}
{{event_location}} {{event_address}} {{join_link}} {{join_passcode}}

Reminder and follow-up emails (12 each)
{{event_name}} {{attendee_name}} {{first_name}} {{ticket_code}} {{seat}}
{{ticket_url}} {{event_date}} {{event_time}} {{event_location}}
{{event_address}} {{join_link}} {{join_passcode}}

Waitlist email (10)
{{event_name}} {{name}} {{first_name}} {{email}} {{ticket_type}}
{{event_date}} {{event_time}} {{event_location}} {{event_address}} {{product_url}}

Online ticket page (15)
{{event_name}} {{event_date}} {{event_time}} {{event_location}} {{attendee_name}}
{{ticket_type}} {{seat}} {{ticket_code}} {{ticket_number}} {{qr_code_url}}
{{pdf_url}} {{calendar_url}} {{logo_url}} {{join_link}} {{join_passcode}}

What some of them print:

  • event_location prints "Online event" on an online event.
  • join_link is the link the ticket uses. A link you pasted wins over a Zoom meeting.
  • join_passcode is the Zoom passcode, or the meeting password you typed for a pasted link.
  • In an email with several tickets, ticket_code and seat list every ticket, ticket_url opens the first ticket's page and qr_code_url is empty.
  • In reminders and follow-ups, ticket_code lists all of the guest's active codes and ticket_url opens their first active ticket.
  • calendar_url on the ticket page jumps to the page's own calendar section.
  • The popup takes no variables. Its HTML must keep the classes et-popup-form, et-popup-cancel and et-popup-submit.

There is no last_name, location_name or buyer_email variable.

Preview and test send

The four email editors have Send test email. It sends your working copy, unsaved edits included, with sample data to any address, and the subject starts with "[Test]". The PDF, the ticket page and the popup have no test send. Timing, resends and previews are covered in the email settings article.

Reset to default

Reset to default sits at the bottom of Global settings, or Style in the popup editor. Its dialog, "Reset this template?", lists what happens before you confirm:

  • your design is replaced with the standard template
  • tickets and emails sent from then on use the standard design
  • any custom HTML is discarded
  • any translations of this template are removed

Reset template saves the reset at once, and Keep my design cancels. It cannot be undone.

On one of the newer designs, the reset returns to that design's starting version. A Physical PDF stays Physical. On a series, the reset reaches the future dates the way a save does. Each reset covers one template; there is no reset-all.

Which events a change reaches

  • Every event holds its own seven templates. A change on one event never changes another.
  • There is no shop-wide template, no apply-to-all button and no save-as-default.
  • A new event starts from the design picked under Event design when you create it. That is Classic unless you pick another.
  • Duplicating an event copies all its templates and its saved designs.
  • On a recurring series, saving a template on the series updates the dates that have not started and still follow the series. Dates already started or past keep theirs.
  • Editing a date's own template makes it that date's own, and it stops following the series. On such a date, Follow the series again in the Design templates panel brings back all seven of the series' templates.
  • If some dates could not be updated, a banner lists them so you can open each one.

The code editor

The code editor replaces one template with your own HTML and shows it live. Open it from Edit code in a card's Actions menu:

  • the four email cards on the Emails tab
  • the Online ticket page card on the Tickets tab
  • the attendee popup card on the Attendee information tab

The PDF ticket and the waitlist popup have no code editor.

  1. Open Edit code. The first time, it holds your current visual design as HTML, with variables in place.
  2. Switch between Code, Both and Preview. The preview has Desktop and Mobile views and fills in a sample buyer, "Jane Doe".
  3. Save in the admin save bar, or with Command-S. From then on, customers get your HTML for that template.
  4. To go back, press Reset to visual. It discards the HTML and restores the visual template.

With several customer languages, pick a language at the top. A language without its own version gets the default code, and a button such as Add Danish version gives it one. Remove version puts that language back on the default code.

Your HTML can hold text, headings, links, images, tables, lists and inline styles. Saving removes scripts, external stylesheets, iframes, embeds, click handlers and javascript links. Video and audio are not allowed.

Keep these in mind:

  • Saving later in the visual editor deletes the custom HTML. The visual editor warns you with the banner "Custom HTML is active".
  • Test sends from the visual editor ignore your HTML.
  • A confirmation email built from your HTML carries no bundle claim links.
  • A ticket page on your HTML has no Update ticket details form and no Change date section.
  • Applying another design stores your HTML with the old design, and switching back restores it. See design themes.
  • An email saved without a document head does not resize on phones, and the editor says so.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one template for all my events?

No. Every template belongs to one event, and there is no shop-wide template or apply-to-all button. Duplicating an event copies all its templates, and the dates of a recurring series follow the series.

Which variables can I use in the confirmation email?

In the code editor the confirmation email takes 14 variables, such as event_name, first_name, ticket_code, qr_code_url and join_link. The Variables button lists them all. In the visual editor only a few fields take variables.

Why did my custom HTML disappear?

Saving in the visual editor replaces custom HTML with the visual design, and the editor shows a warning banner before you do. Reset to default deletes it too. Applying another design stores it with the old design until you switch back.

Can I undo Reset to default?

No. The reset replaces the design, deletes its custom HTML and its translations, and cannot be undone.
