Troubleshooting Easy Image Organizer

Common Easy Image Organizer issues - failed saves, scan stuck, missing images - and how to fix them.

Updated May 20, 2026

This page covers the issues we see most often and how to fix them.

Save fails on one or more products

Symptoms: you click Save all changes, the progress bar moves, but some products show a failure indicator and stay in the "Unsaved" state.

Most common causes:

  • A product was modified in Shopify admin between your edit and your save. Refresh the Organizer view to pull current state, redo your changes, save again.
  • A product is locked by another app or process. Wait a minute and retry. If it persists, identify the other app (often a bulk-edit app or a Flow workflow).
  • Shopify rate limit hit. Easy Image Organizer paces saves to avoid this, but very large batches can occasionally trip it. Wait two minutes and retry.

Failed products stay in the modified set so you can retry without redoing the edit.

"Auto optimize all" overwrote my hand-written alt text

Cause: that's what the button does. It runs auto-optimisation on every image in the current view.

Prevention next time: filter to "Alt text status = Missing" before clicking Auto optimise all, so only missing alt text gets filled. Or use the per-row wand icon for selective optimisation.

Recovery: Easy Image Organizer doesn't keep a history of old alt text. If you have it backed up (e.g. from a Shopify export), restore from there. Going forward, work in smaller filtered sweeps.

Duplicate scanner is stuck

Symptoms: scan has been running for a long time with no progress.

Causes (in order):

  • Browser tab was throttled. Some browsers throttle background tabs. Bring the tab to the front and keep it open.
  • Network blip. Refresh the page. The scan offers a Resume button if it was interrupted.
  • 30-minute scan-lock not released. Easy Image Organizer auto-releases stuck scan locks after 30 minutes. If you triggered a scan that hung, wait 30 minutes from the start time before triggering a new one.

If a scan has been running for over an hour with no progress, contact support.

Duplicate scanner finishes but finds nothing

Symptoms: scan completes, no duplicate groups shown.

Cause: you probably don't have visual duplicates! This is the most common reason. Some clean catalogues are genuinely dedup-free.

Less common causes:

  • All duplicates were already cleaned in a previous scan. The scanner only finds current state.
  • Your duplicates are crops or recolours, not visual duplicates. Perceptual hashing catches identical-looking images at different sizes/compression. It doesn't catch images that are visibly different (cropped, recoloured, edited).

"Free plan limit reached" but I'm under 100

Symptoms: upgrade modal appears even though you don't think you've made 100 edits.

Cause: the counter ticks at save time, not at modify time. If you've done lots of reorder/delete/upload cycles, even small ones, each save tick counts.

Check: open the Plans page in Easy Image Organizer. It shows the exact counter for the current billing cycle.

If the counter genuinely looks wrong, contact support with your shop URL.

Image SEO tool doesn't show "Not used" images

Symptoms: switching to the "Not used" view returns nothing.

Cause: every image in your store is attached to a product or collection. Lucky you. The "Not used" view finds files in Shopify Files that aren't referenced elsewhere - if you've never uploaded files directly to Shopify Files (only via product creation), there usually aren't any.

Images won't drag

Symptoms: you hover the image strip but the drag handle doesn't appear, or dragging doesn't move the image.

Causes:

  • Browser extensions can interfere. Try Incognito/Private window.
  • Touch device without active touch. On laptops with both trackpad and touchscreen, sometimes the touch handler captures the event. Click the image first, then drag.
  • Very slow connection. Drag-and-drop requires the image thumbnail to be loaded. Wait for the strip to render fully.

Upload fails silently

Symptoms: you drop an image on the "+" tile and nothing happens.

Causes:

  • File too large. Shopify enforces file size limits. Try a smaller version.
  • Unsupported format. Shopify supports JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP for product images. HEIC, SVG (in most product contexts), and other formats fail silently.
  • Network blip. Refresh and retry.
