Brand tags and filter pills
Tag your brands into categories like Skincare or Clothes on the Tags page, tag many brands at once, group several tags under one pill, and let shoppers filter the brand directory.
Updated July 24, 2026
Tags group your brands into categories - for example "Skincare" or "Clothes". On the storefront they become filter pills that shoppers click to narrow the brand directory, and in the theme editor they let you pin a block to a single category. All tagging happens on the Tags page. Tags are part of the Plus plan - on the free plan the Tags page is read-only and no pills show on the storefront.
The first time you open the page, a short guided tour explains how tagging works - it shows once, and you can skip it any time.
The setup guide
The Set up tags section at the top of the Tags page walks you through the two things pills need, and checks each step off automatically:
- Add the brand page block to your theme - the pills live inside the Brand page block, so it has to be in your theme first. If the app can't see your theme setup, use Mark as done.
- Tag your brands - checks itself off as soon as one brand has a tag.
Once both are done, the section shrinks to a "Tags live" badge and stays out of your way.
Tagging many brands at once
- Open Tags. The brand list has a checkbox on each row.
- Tick the brands you want to tag (the checkbox in the header selects the whole page, and your selection is kept while you search or change pages).
- Click Add tags, tick existing tags or type a new one, and confirm. The picked tags are added to every selected brand - existing tags are kept.
- Remove tags works the same way in reverse: it strips the picked tags from every selected brand.
To edit ONE brand's exact tag set, use the small edit button next to its tag badges in the same list.
The filter button next to the search bar speeds this up: pick the Untagged view to see only brands without tags (perfect for a first tagging pass), Tagged for the opposite, or a single tag to review exactly which brands carry it.
Every change publishes to your storefront immediately, the same as mappings and favourites. If publishing fails, a banner appears with a Re-sync to storefront button to retry.
Grouping tags under one pill
The Tag groups section at the top of the Tags page shows several tags as ONE pill. Example: you tag brands with "cream" and "lotion", then create a group named "Skincare" containing both - shoppers see a single Skincare pill that covers every brand with either tag.
- Brands keep their own tags - grouping only changes what shoppers see, so it is fully reversible. Delete the group and the original pills come back.
- Click Create group, name it (that name is the pill), and tick the tags that belong to it. A tag can be in one group at a time.
- The group's pill takes the position of its earliest tag in your tag order.
- The theme block's "Only show brands with this tag" setting matches both the group name and the original tag names, so pinned blocks keep working.
- Limits: up to 20 groups; group names follow the same rules as tag names.
Managing your tags
Click Manage tags at the top of the Tags page to:
- Create new tags before assigning them.
- Rename a tag everywhere at once.
- Reorder tags with the up/down arrows - this order is the order of the filter pills on your brand page.
- Delete tags you no longer need.
Limits: up to 50 tags per shop, up to 10 per brand, names up to 40 characters, and no "|" character.
If a theme block is pinned to a tag via "Only show brands with this tag" and you rename or delete that tag, remember to update that block's setting too.
How the pills work on the storefront
On the brand page block, the filter pills appear between the heading and the A-Z bar: an "All" pill plus one pill per tag. Shoppers click a pill to filter the brand grid to that category.
- Pills combine with search and the A-Z letters, so a shopper can filter to "Skincare" and then search within it.
- The featured brands row follows the tag filter too.
- Pills only appear once at least one visible brand has a tag. A tag whose brands are all excluded, locked on the free plan, or hidden as out of stock shows no pill.
Theme editor settings
The Brand Page theme block has a Filters settings group:
- Show tag filter pills - on/off toggle (on by default). The "All" pill label setting only shows while this is on.
- "All" pill label - the text on the first pill (default "All").
- Only show brands with this tag - type a tag name to pin this block to one category. Case does not matter.
One brand page per category
The "Only show brands with this tag" setting lets you run a separate page per category:
- Create a page per category (for example
/pages/skincare-brandsand/pages/clothing-brands). - Add a Brand Page block to each page in the theme editor.
- In each block's Filters group, type the tag name into Only show brands with this tag.
Each block then shows only that category's brands, with the pills hidden - a clean, dedicated directory per category.
Publishing
Tags publish to the storefront automatically the moment you save - see how brand syncing works for the full mechanic and the Re-sync retry.
Frequently asked questions
How many tags can I use?
Up to 50 tags per shop and up to 10 tags per brand. Tag names can be up to 40 characters and can't contain the "|" character.
Why doesn't a tag show as a pill on the storefront?
First check your plan: tags are a Plus feature, and on the free plan no pills are published. On Plus, a pill only appears once at least one visible brand has that tag. Excluded brands, brands locked by the free-plan cap, and brands hidden by the out-of-stock setting don't count. Also check that "Show tag filter pills" is on in the theme block and that "Only show brands with this tag" is empty.
Can I run a separate brand page per category?
Yes. Add a Brand Page block on each page and type a tag name in the block's "Only show brands with this tag" setting. That block then shows only that category's brands, with the pills hidden - for example a Skincare brand page and a Clothes brand page.
