How to rename or merge product vendors on Shopify

By Founder of UpsellShark and a working Shopify merchantLast reviewed

Short answer

There are two ways to deal with messy or duplicate product vendors on Shopify. To fix the data itself, use the bulk product editor: filter your products by vendor, select the ones with the wrong spelling, and rename them all to one clean vendor value. If you also run Easy Brand Page, its storefront brand directory already treats case, spacing and accent variants like "Nike", "nike " and "NIKE" as one brand, so duplicates collapse on the page even while the underlying vendor values still vary.

How it works

01

Find your duplicate vendors

Open Products in the Shopify admin and filter by Vendor. Each distinct spelling is its own filter value, so "Nike", "nike " and "NIKE" show up as three separate vendors, which is how you spot the duplicates you need to merge.

02

Select the products with one spelling

Filter to a single wrong spelling, then select every product it matches. Shopify lets you select all products across the filter, not just the ones on the current page.

03

Open the bulk product editor

With the products selected, choose Edit products to open the bulk editor. If the Vendor field is not shown, add it as a column so you can edit vendor for every selected product at once.

04

Rename them to one clean vendor

Type the correct vendor spelling and apply it to every selected product, then save. All of those products now share one clean vendor value instead of the old variant.

05

Repeat until the duplicates are gone

Do the same for each remaining variant spelling until every product points at the single vendor name you want. Once they all match, the duplicate vendors merge into one. If you run Easy Brand Page, its auto-sync then updates the storefront directory on its own.

What you get

  • Case, spacing and accent spellings shown as one brand in the directory
  • The most-used spelling picked automatically as the brand name
  • Product counts summed across every spelling of a brand
  • No change to the vendor stored on your products
  • Automatic re-sync after you clean up vendors in Shopify
  • A free plan for up to 30 brands

Fix the data at the source, or just fix the display

Shopify stores a product vendor as free text on every product, so any difference in case, spacing or accents becomes a separate vendor. The bulk product editor is the real fix: it rewrites the vendor value itself, which matters if you filter by vendor, export products, run reports, or use other apps that read that field.

If all you want is a tidy shop-by-brand page for shoppers, you do not have to touch the data at all. Easy Brand Page keeps your brand directory clean even if the underlying vendor values still vary, so a storefront list can look right while you fix the product data on your own schedule, or never.

How Easy Brand Page merges spelling variants

When Easy Brand Page scans your vendors, it groups spellings that only differ by case, spacing or accents into one brand, and labels that brand with the spelling used on the most products. The product counts from every spelling are added together, so the brand shows its true total.

It does this for the directory display only - it never rewrites the vendor on your products. The brand syncing runs automatically when products change, so the merged list stays current whether or not you ever clean up the raw vendor values.
