On the surface, a few duplicate product images look harmless. In practice, they pile up fast and create real, measurable problems for Shopify merchants - especially once a catalog gets past a few hundred SKUs.

SEO penalty for duplicate images. Google Image Search ranks pages partly on image uniqueness. When the same supplier photo is reused on twenty product pages, Google has no reason to surface yours over a competitor using a unique shot. Your image rankings flatline.
